In the moments when the soul is in the lowest depths, faith is the only way to live. God was not satisfied alone. It is near and not hard to attain. Christianity is belief plus confession; it involves witness before men. Isaiah says: "I was found of them who sought me not; I was made manifest unto them that asked not after me." He bade them read that chapter, "Let not your hearts be troubled"; and, as they read it, he did not take the verses, and apply them to himself. Those that were under the law were to do all themselves, Do this, and live; but the gospel discovers the greatest part of the work done already, and what remains cut short in righteousness, salvation offered upon very plain and easy terms, brought to our door, as it were, in the word which is nigh us. The "word of faith" is the message of justification by the system of "faith" as opposed to the Law. (325) It is the word which requires faith, and is received by faith; or it is the word entitled to faith, worthy of being believed; or it is the word which generates and supports faith. . If salvation for man is possible by any other means, if man can be saved by the law, if man can be saved by his own efforts, by his good works, if a man can be saved by sincerity, then, God, let this cup pass from Me. Finally he comes to two other witnesses; as from the Psalms, so now from the law and the prophets. This he shows further, Romans 10:3; Romans 10:3, where we may observe. "Oh, come over here and sit on Grandpa's lap. They have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. No; clear, straight, cutting like a sharp razor, he puts before us the single sentence, "He that doeth those things shall live by them.". Have you been born again?" No Gentile would do it who had not ceased worshipping the emperor as Kurios. On the contrary, he says Gods word is as close to a person as his own mouth and heart. Accordingly Romans 8:1-39 pursues in the most practical manner the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free. For there is one God and one mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus. If you find him in it will not much matter where you find him, in heaven or in the deep, for he must be almighty everywhere. For all this, as he presses further, there was the weightiest reason possible. "The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,"[ a] that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: 9 If you declare with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. All rights reserved. When a person comes up to me and says, "Oh, I have the hardest time trusting God," what they are really saying is, "I really don't know God very well." "What are you?" Compare Romans 10:14; Romans 10:14. That is, it is not merely pardon of past sins, but deliverance from sin, and in due time from all its consequences. But the righteousness which stems from faith speaks like this--"Do not say in your heart, 'Who shall go up into heaven?' But what does it say? The application of this was more evident to the Gentile than to the Jew. I have lost a friend tender and true to me, and my heart is too full for utterance. Just before Israel crossed into the Promised Land, Moses spoke of righteousness by faith.. Has He mercy only for guilty Israel? It is not a question of His mercy merely; for this weakens the truth immensely, and perverts its character wholly. First, he cites Isaiah 28:16: "Every one who believes in him will not be put to shame." And it is well for those ignorant of it to know that here, in verse 4, the apostle speaks first of "walking not after the flesh, but after the Spirit." The past prepared the way, as it is said here, "which God had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures, concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, [here we have the great central object of God's gospel, even the person of Christ, God's Son,] which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh" (ver. No, He has already come and brought salvation down from heaven to men. It is through the Word of God that we come to know God. and Jack replied, "I do not know much about these things; but this I do know and am sure of, They put him back for awhile, to try if he would grow in his knowledge, but he never went an inch beyond the first standard. Still, it is "man" not yet exactly the Jew, but man who had profited, it might be, by whatever the Jew had; at the least, by the workings of natural conscience. There must be a radical, ii. The hope of salvation by works is black despair; yet we have a set of men on the face of the earth who are always wanting us to preach up this hopeless hope, and urging us to lay this heavy burden upon the shoulders of dying men. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek ( Romans 10:11-12 ): Quite a statement for Paul a Hebrew of the Hebrews to make--no difference between the Jew and the Greek, that is, as far as salvation is concerned. (1.) He know what he did know, and to that he held fast, Well, they must take him into the church; they could not well refuse a man with such a confession of faith; and when he was in the church, walking with the brethren, he was happier than the rest of them, at which they greatly marvelled, and one said to him, "Brother Jack, don't you sometimes feel doubts and fears? How can they call on him in whom they have not believed? He saves those who are always confessors of sin, always needy in themselves, and therefore always glad of him. It is no longer a question of man's guilt, but of his nature. If you wish to be saved by the law you must do its commands and you shall live. It is the paradox of the human situation that God is in control and yet the human will is free. They wanted Jerusalem to be shut down completely on the Sabbath day, and he just let their sections be shut down but allowed cars to be driven in other sections. . (that is, to bring Christ again from the dead.) If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved: We do not gain God's righteousness by works. "Whosoever." It is our rejecting the gifts our Lord offers in His Means of Grace. The Jews were the last in the world to take such ground as this. So therefore it addressed itself to the obedience of faith; not by this meaning practice, still less according to the measure of a man's duty, but that which is at the root of all practice faith-obedience obedience of heart and will, renewed by divine grace, which accepts the truth of God. If God has made you feel yourself a sinner, then Christ is such a Savior as you need and you may have him at once: the only difficulty lies in the way being so easy that you can hardly think it can be so. Strange as it was, this too was foretold. To say that faith-righteousness says these things simply means it is characterized by them. The righteousness of God flows from His mercy, of course; but its character and basis is righteousness. (1-3) Israels refusal to submit to the righteousness of God. Be nothing; be nobody; and trust Him. This God has wrought in Christ. It is not, as in Ephesians 2:1-22, dead in sins, which would be nothing to the purpose. For this (Romans 10:11; Romans 10:11) he quotes Isaiah 28:16, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed; ou kataischynthesetai. It was for this then that Paul describes himself as apostle. c. But the righteousness of faith: This is based on Jesus, and we dont have to work to get Jesus. There is no language where their voice is not heard. Not in our descending, but in Christ's descending our hope is to be found. Yet from beginning to end there is no anger in it; there is nothing but wistful longing and heartfelt yearning. This might seem an exaggeration: the gospel had not been carried throughout all the earth, not even to all the lands that were known to the inhabitants of the Graeco-Roman world. Then call upon the Lord, and you shall be saved. He is not coming according to the covenant that God established by Moses for sins to be forgiven. This is the essential point. He brings out the peculiar glories of Israel according to the depth of the gospel as he knew and preached it; at least, of His person who is the object of faith now revealed. This was no question of legal obedience, although the law came from Jehovah. , , The word, that is, the word of faith is nigh thee. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth ii. The "word of faith" is the gospel Paul preaches and has explained in detail in Romans one through eight. "His flesh was torn off by the whips, and he streamed down with blood, and his flanks were laid open by wounds." He must not only know about Christ: he must know him. i. He is consistent with Himself when He is justifying sinners, or, more strictly, all those who believe in Jesus. In the rest of chapter 15 the apostle dwells on the extent of his apostleship, renews his expression of the thought and hope of visiting Rome, and at the same time shows how well he remembered the need of the poor at Jerusalem. He shall not be ashamed of his hope in Christ; he shall not be disappointed of his end. It was laid down that, in the event of sickness, measures might be taken to keep the patient from becoming worse, but not to make him better. ( Romans 10:5-8 ). Man became the object, first, of general dealings of God under Noah; next, of His special ways in the calling of Abraham and of his family. When people say we need something other than Gods word, they deny what Paul wrote (compare 2 Timothy 3:16-17). If you were to descend there, what would you do without him whom God has anointed to save? Pastor Mark Schlamann. Be he Jew or be he Gentile, his only righteousness by law must come through the doing of the law. Knowing God we come to believe and trust in God. for on your own showing, according to that word to which we all bow, you must admit that one man's sin brought in universal moral ruin and death. For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever.". And that word is the message of faith which we proclaim. We, O Antiochus," he said, "who live under a divine law, consider no compulsion to be so forcible as obedience to our law." THE DESTRUCTION OF EXCUSES ( Romans 10:14-21 ), 10:14-21 How are they to call on him on whom they have not believed? And as it is for obedience of faith, it was not in anywise restricted to the Jewish people "among all nations, for his (Christ's) name: among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ" (verses 5, 6). Now that God has revealed Himself in the gospel, it is not what will suit man on earth, but what is worthy of the presence of the glory of God. This occupies the central part of the chapter, which then closes with the unfailing and faithful power of God for us in all our experiences here below. Thus the deliverance is not merely for the joy of the soul, but also for strength in our walking after the Spirit, who has given and found a nature in which He delights, communicating withal His own delight in Christ, and making obedience to be the joyful service of the believer. (4-8) The contrast between Gods righteousness and our attempts at righteousness. Justification by faith lays the foundation of our title to salvation; but by confession we build upon that foundation, and come at last to the full possession of that to which we were entitled. 11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. "For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified." Paul does not raise the possibility of the message being read. Help me to believe, Lord." And where? What is to be done according to Gods word? He believed God and His word, with special approval on God's part; and his faith was counted as righteousness (ver. First, he raises the question, "Has God cast away his people?" The man who does those things shall live by them: The Law of Moses makes the path to righteousness through the law plain. The facts were so well known by the preaching of the apostles, that they might be said to be in every mans mouth. - BN. Notice, first, what Moses said. The day hastens when the Redeemer shall come to Zion. He shall never have cause to repent his confidence in reposing such a trust in the Lord Jesus. It is implied in this wish that they might be convinced and converted; he could not pray in faith that they might be saved in their unbelief. Anyone who thinks that justification by faith is a new concept needs to re-study the Old Testament and the book of Romans. And there (for such was the point) it was the complete condemnation of this evil thing, the nature in its present state, so as, nevertheless, to set the believer as before God's judgment free from itself as well as its consequences. * I scarcely knew what to preach from this morning; but at last I settled in my mind that I would raise a memorial to my departed friend by preaching a sermon which should be connected with himself. Jesus in the garden prayed, "Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me." Talk not thus. 2 173). 11, 12). I know that he would have said to me, Give them Christ crucified, and salvation by grace through faith, as plainly as ever you can; for when he was sore sick and in the very agony of death, he repeated as his dying creed, and in his own quaint way he added, "They may talk as much as ever they like, but the whole of it lies in Jack the Huckster's verse. Do not believe in yourself, but believe in Jesus. Now as to the test of death. The apostle has come now to the nature. I would like to boast about what I have done, the dangers that I have braved for God, the sacrifices that I have made, the dedication that took me through those dark, smelly, dangerous swamps. Not so, says the apostle; it is because of the evil of the nature, not of the law. He has put the two things together, "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved." He does not, however, exclude other parts of the word, no, not even the precepts of the law; but his design is, to show that remission of sins stands for righteousness, even apart from that strict obedience which the law demands. What saith the gospel? This is where so many religious people even sincere Christians go astray. For this he quotes that scripture (Leviticus 18:5), You shall therefore keep my statutes and my judgments, which if a man do, he shall live in them.
